Dr. Oumair Aejaz History

Dr. Oumair Aejaz, 40, originally from Rochester Hills, Michigan, is an Indian national who moved to the United States in 2011 to participate in a medical internship. Since then, he has been living and working in the U.S. on a visa. Specializing in internal medicine, Dr. Aejaz completed his residency at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit before relocating to Dothan, Alabama, around 2018. His medical career spanned multiple states, raising concerns that his alleged criminal activities may extend beyond Michigan.

According to Oakland County Sheriff, Dr. Aejaz’s conduct could potentially affect victims in multiple states and even internationally. His employment as a contracted physician, rather than working for a single medical institution, means that he was assigned to various hospitals and clinics, complicating efforts to determine the full extent of his abuse.

Upon returning to Michigan, Dr. Aejaz continued his medical practice in Oakland County, where police have confirmed that he worked at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township. However, it has been clarified that he was not directly employed by either facility. Instead, he was part of a larger contracting arrangement, which allowed him to work at numerous medical facilities across the region.

Authorities are still investigating the breadth of Dr. Aejaz’s employment history, attempting to uncover all the locations where he may have treated patients. Because he worked for a third-party contracting firm and moved between facilities, it remains unclear how many different venues he practiced at and for how long.  So we have no idea what the scope of these evil could be.

A Shocking Betrayal of Trust

Dr. Aejaz’s actions represent a horrifying breach of the trust patients place in their medical providers. According to reports, detectives have found more than 13,000 videos stored on devices confiscated from Dr. Aejaz’s home, including footage of women and children as young as 2 years old. His depravity extended to hospital rooms, where he spied on patients recovering from surgeries, and even private locations like a local swim club.

The emotional and psychological impact of this kind of violation is profound. Even if you are unsure whether you were recorded, the mere possibility can lead to overwhelming anxiety, fear, and trauma. Many patients report feeling violated, betrayed, and fearful of their images being shared or leaked online.

Dr. Aejaz’s wife filed for a divorce and sought a protective order.  She too alleges that her husband had been secretly recording her in their home.  She says he installed cameras in their home, including the bathroom, and captured footage of her without her consent.

The prediction here is that he goes to jail for a very long time.  The question now is what claims victims of this awfulness have moving forward.

Criminal Charges

Dr. Aejaz has been charged with secretly recording his patients using hidden cameras, capturing deeply invasive images of patients, including children and adults, often while they were asleep, unconscious, or in vulnerable situations such as changing rooms, bathrooms, and hospital recovery areas.

He has been charged with ten felony counts:

  • One count of child sexually abusive activity.
  • One count of using a computer to create and or reproduce child sexually abusive material.
  • Two counts of capturing/recording children under the age of 18 while nude.
  • Two counts of capturing/recording two women over the age of 18 while nude.
  • Four counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

Hospitals and Other Liable Parties

Our attorneys believe the hospitals where Dr. Aejaz worked, including Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and Ascension Genesys Hospital, may also be responsible for failing to protect patients.

Ascension, the largest nonprofit health system in the United States, operates in many areas, including private equity and insurance, making them a viable defendant.  Ascension has a duty to ensure that predatory behavior from physicians is prevented or detected early.

Dr. Oumair Aejaz Settlement Amounts

This litigation against Dr. Aejaz and these hospitals are new. There are many ways this can play out. But victims want to get some idea of what settlement amounts and jury payouts victims may see in these lawsuits.

Of course, we have no idea what the ultimate compensation for victims will be.  But we can speculate based on what we do know.

The best marker for comparison is the settlement in the case involving Johns Hopkins gynecologist Dr. Nikita Levy, who secretly recorded patients during exams.  Those lawsuits resulted in a $190 million settlement in 2014. This was part of a class action lawsuit that included approximately 8,000 women who were affected by his actions.

The settlement distribution varied depending on factors such as the extent of the harm and the patient’s specific experience, with individual settlement amounts ranging from around $1,800 to $25,000 per person, though some of the victims received larger compensation.

The Dr. Oumair Aejaz settlement amounts could be three times as high. Why do our lawyers believe these compensation payouts could be three times as high?

Is that number pulled out of thin air?  Maybe a little bit. It is certainly early in this litigation to predict settlement payouts with any precision. But three things inform our thinking:

  • Inflation: Those numbers are now ten years old so that alone translates into higher settlement amounts.
  • Sex Abuse Settlement Amounts Are Increasing: Juries today place higher value on sexual violation lawsuits. This is due to increased awareness and societal focus on the impact of sexual abuse, driven by movements like #MeToo and greater public dialogue on consent and trauma. Additionally, legal reforms and a shift towards prioritizing victim-centered justice have contributed to larger awards for damages in these cases.
  • This Is Worse Than Dr. Levy: There is still a lot to learn. But these cases just seem worse than Levy. The charges are worse. Prosecutors believe Aejaz recorded sexual encounters women who were asleep or unconscious and recorded relatives in the bathroom or while changing. There are also cases involving children. It just seems a whole different level than we saw with Levy.

Your Legal Rights as a Victim

You don’t need to have proof that you were recorded to seek justice. Just as in other high-profile cases involving predatory doctors who used hidden cameras, like the case against John Hopkins gynecologist Dr. Nikita Levy, victims were entitled to compensation for the emotional and psychological trauma they suffered simply from learning about their doctor’s abuse. You may be entitled to compensation even if you never saw a recording but were treated by Dr. Aejaz and now suffer from anxiety, fear, loss of trust in medical professionals, or other psychological injuries.
