About Dr. Bomba

Dr. Bradford Bomba was a doctor who worked for Indiana University (“IU”) and its sports programs for several decades. Most notably, Dr. Bomba served as the IU men’s basketball team physician for nearly 30 years and the U.S. Olympic Men’s Basketball Team Physician under former IU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bob Knight.

Dr. Bomba first began working for IU in the early 1960s, when he provided medical services to its various sports programs. In 1979, Dr. Bomba contracted with IU to serve as the physician for the IU men’s basketball program, a position he held for several decades, concluding in the late 1990s.

During his 3 decades at IU, Dr. Bomba’s student athlete patients were subjected to routine, systemic sexual assault and sex-based harassment under the guise of medical care. Numerous students and members of the IU basketball team were routinely and repeatedly subjected to medically unnecessary, invasive, and abusive digital rectal examinations by Dr. Bomba.

Indiana University Failed to Prevent Dr. Bomba’s

IU is now facing lawsuits by Dr. Bomba’s victims claiming that the university was negligent in not protecting them. Victims are alleging that IU knew or should have known about Dr. Bomba’s sexual abuse of students. But despite its knowledge of Dr. Bomba’s repeated sexual assaults, IU systemically mishandled and turned a blind eye to Hoosier men’s basketball players’ complaints of Dr. Bomba’s sexual misconduct.

IU’s failure to take effective preventative measures allowed this sexually abusive behavior to persist, caused harm to students, and perpetuated a policy of deliberate indifference to and tacit acceptance of Dr. Bomba’s sexual misconduct.

As a condition of continued participation in IU’s basketball program, players were required to submit to annual physicals with doctors chosen and provided by IU – Dr. Bomba. During physical examinations, Dr. Bomba would digitally penetrate the patient’s rectums under the guise of performing a prostate examination (something that was totally unnecessary on health men in their early 20s).

Dr. Bomba’s routine sexual assaults were openly discussed by the Hoosier men’s basketball players in the locker room in the presence of IU employees, including assistant coaches, athletic trainers, and other Hoosier men’s basketball staff. Dr. Bomba’s routine sexual assaults were such common knowledge that the Hoosier team and its staff referred to Dr. Bomba as “Frankenstein” due to the large size of his hands and fingers.

Sexual Abuse Lawsuits By Victims of Dr. Bomba

Over his career at IU, Dr. Bomba sexually abused and assaulted countless students. These victims of Dr. Bomba are now coming forward and filing civil sex abuse lawsuits against Indiana University for negligently failing to protect them.

The lawsuits claim that IU, through its agents and employees, had actual knowledge of what Dr. Bomba was doing and that it was medically unnecessary and sexually abusive. The lawsuits claim that IU had a legal duty to intervene and take action to prevent Dr. Bomba from abusing patients.

The plaintiffs in these lawsuits against IU are seeking financial compensation from the university for the emotional damage caused by Dr. Bomba’s abuse.

Potential Settlement Value of Dr. Bomba IU Lawsuits

The settlement value of sexual abuse lawsuits depends on a variety of factors, including the extent and severity of the abuse, the strength of the evidence proving that the abuse happened, and the financial resources of the third-party defendant (i.e., Indiana University).  In this situation, we have a very good idea of the potential settlement value of claims by Dr. Bomba victims based on very similar claims that were brought against another sports doctor at the University of Michigan (Dr. Robert Anderson).

Dr. Anderson’s acts of sexual abuse of his patients were very similar to those committed by Dr. Bomba. The University of Michigan agreed to settle claims brought by over 1,000 victims of Dr. Anderson for a total payout of $460 million – an average payout of $400,000 per victim. The claims against IU involving Dr. Bomba could have a similar settlement value.

Victims of Dr. Bomba Can Still File Lawsuits

Dr. Bomba retired from practice nearly 30 years ago, so most of his sexual assaults occurred a long time in the past. That doesn’t mean that it is too late for Dr. Bomba’s victims to get justice. Many of the victims who got compensation in the UM Dr. Anderson settlement had claims that were similarly dated. Our firm is actively seeking and accepting cases from victims of Dr. Bomba regardless of how long ago the sexual abuse occurred.
