About Winston Nguyen
A little over 10 years ago, Winston Nguyen (who was then in his late 20s) was a contestant on the popular TV game show Jeopardy. Nguyen went on to become a 2-time Jeopardy champion and appeared in 2 episodes of the show.
More recently, Nguyen was working as a mathematics teacher at Saint Ann’s School, a fairly prestigious private school in Brooklyn Heights. In March 2024, however, Nguyen pleaded guilty to sexual crimes involving child pornography, solicitation and other criminal acts.
Allegations Against Winston Nguyen
Last year, Nguyen was charged with a host of sex crimes. Prosecutors accused Nguyen of soliciting and distributing explicit images and videos of minors. Between October 2022 and May 2024, he allegedly posed as a teenager on Snapchat to target children between the ages of 13 and 16. The victims were students at several of Brooklyn’s elite private schools, including Saint Ann’s, Poly Prep Country Day School, Berkeley Carroll School, and Packer Collegiate Institute.
In March 2025, Nguyen accepted a plea bargain deal. Nguyen pleaded guilty to one count of inducing a minor to engage in a sexual performance, as well as five additional counts of actions that were injurious to a minor.
Below is a detailed timeline of the events and allegations related to Winston Ngyuen.
- In June 2024 Nguyen was pulled out of his classroom and taken into custody during the police investigation. He was later released without being charged while the police awaited the results of forensic testing.
- The day after Nguyen was taken to the police station, Saint Ann’s school placed him on administrative leave and notified parents of the ongoing police investigation. Saint Ann’s later fired him after charges were announced.
- In July 2024, Nguyen was formally arrested and charged with over 30 counts all of which involved soliciting and distributing explicit images/videos from minors
- The prosecutors issued a public statement about the charges. That statement explained that Nguyen was impersonating a teenager on Snapchat, he engaged with minors and now faces charges involving five female and one male victim from private Brooklyn schools, including Saint Ann’s, Poly Prep, Berkeley Carroll, and Packer Collegiate Institute. Authorities also believe he may have had similar online interactions with numerous other children.
- Nguyen allegedly engaged in 11 incidents involving six minors age 13-15 between 2022 and 2024 – while he was a teacher at Saint Anns.
- Nguyen was caught after an investigation was launched and the Snapchat accounts involved in the solicitations were traced back to Nguyen’s IP address at his house in Harlem.
- In December 2024, a law firm hired by Saint Ann’s School completed an investigation into the actions of school administrators. The investigation revealed that the school administrators were negligent in hiring Nguyen and that they ignored complains and warning signs about Nguyen’s sexual misconduct.
Holding Schools Liable for Sexual Abuse
Schools have a legal duty to take reasonable measures to ensure that their students are safe. This includes ensuring that students are safe from sexual abuse and assault by teachers and staff at the school. When a teacher sexually abuses a student, the school can be liable in a civil case if the plaintiff can show that the school was negligent in its hiring or supervision of the teacher.
If a school hired a teacher with previous history of sexual misconduct, that would constitute negligent hiring. Negligent supervision claims usually involve some type of failure by the school to investigate prior complaints about a teacher, or ignoring potential warnings signs or inappropriate conduct.

Possible Claims Against Saint Ann’s School
At the time that these actions occurred, Nguyen was working at the St. Ann’s school in Brooklyn Heights. There is some evidence suggesting that the school could potentially face liability for Ngyuen’s actions based on theories of negligent hiring and negligent supervision.
Nguyen had a prior grand larceny conviction related to allegations that he stole over $300,000 from an elderly couple under his care. He pleaded guilty in 2018, serving five months of a six-month jail sentence, followed by five years of probation. Despite this criminal record, Saint Ann’s School hired him in 2020.
An independent investigation by a law firm hired by Saint Ann’s School revealed that top school officials were aware of his felony record at the time of his hiring. Much more significantly, report also found that student and parent complaints about Nguyen were ignored.
This institutional negligence may establish legal liability under New York law. Any student victimized by Nguyen is encouraged to contact our experienced legal team for a confidential consultation as soon as possible.
