To confirm that corporate status you will need to look the company up on the list of registered corporate entities for your state. All states have an online datebase to search. In Maryland, you can search the SDAT Business Entity database.

Most people would assume that the lawsuit would be against the Dunkin Donuts corporation, but that would not actually be the proper party. Dunkin Donuts is a franchise, so the defendant in your lawsuit would be the owner of the franchise location where the injury occurred.  The owner could be an individual or a company like Acme Resturants LLC.

Where Can You Sue a Company?

Corporate entities can be sued in any location where they are subject to the court’s personal jurisdiction. A company is generally subject to court jurisdiction in several places, including: (1) the state where the company is incorporated, (2) the state where the company has its principal headquarters, (3) any state where the company has an office or store and does business in the state, and (4) any state where the company reaches out to do business and ends up causing injury within that state.
